Registration: This event is open to all PACIFIC 2017 trade visitors, exhibitors and conference delegates however, pre-registration is required.

Location: Pyrmont Theatre, ICC Sydney

The 2017 Sea Power Conference will explore the broad theme of The Navy and the Nation, focusing on maritime identity, the significance of maritime economics and use of the oceans; and the critical importance of defence industry to developing and maintaining naval capability. Navies do not exist for their own sake, nor do they exist in isolation. While navies are an expression of government resolve in managing and protecting the oceans, they are also a national enterprise drawing heavily upon civil infrastructure and society. It is this aspect that is oft neglected in discussions about defence in general and navies in particular.

Hosted by: The Defence Industry Education and Skills Consortium (DIESC)

Location: Level 3 Exhibition, ICC Sydney

The Defence Industry Education and Skills Consortium (DIESC) is an initiative of a cross-state group of universities, vocational education providers and industry bodies to provide a practical solution to the effective coordination of education and skills provision in the defence industry sector.

  • The Defence Teaming Centre
  • The University of South Australia
  • The University of Adelaide
  • Flinders University
  • RMIT University
  • Edith Cowan University
  • TAFE SA
  • South Metropolitan TAFE
  • The Indigenous Defence Consortium.

This event will be the official launch of the DIESC, which will include a panel discussion with key industry and academic stakeholders involved in the future naval shipbuilding programs.

The sheer scale of the combined naval shipbuilding programs will require a significant increase in skilled personnel for both defence industries and the defence forces, especially in engineering, ICT and other technical skills, this represents a significant risk to the success of these critical projects. Without strategic intervention, it is not clear how this requirement will be fulfilled. The panel will address the challenges and discuss how we as a national can overcome them.

FFG Sustainment: From Availability Comes Knowledge; from Knowledge Comes Lethality

Date: Tuesday 3 October

Time: 1400 - 1500

Registration: This event is open to all PACIFIC 2017 trade visitors, exhibitors and conference delegates however, pre-registration is required.

  • Step 1 - Register as a PACIFIC 2017 trade visitor here. Exhibitors can also attend this event, but will be required to have an exhibitor badge.
  • Step 2 - Register your attendance for the FFG Sustainment briefing by contacting CAPT Brad Smith here.

Hosted by: Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG)

Location: Level 3 Exhibition, ICC Sydney

Managing a combat capability from an Asset Management perspective can be a difficult and complex endeavour. To deliver the maximum effect requires a large amount of training and experience operating a ship at sea to understand its full capabilities. The underlying fundamental requirement for a sustainment organisation then is to provide maximum availability and high levels of reliability of the system. It is only once this is achieved that full capability and lethality can be sought. The FFG is a case study in the value of delivering available and reliable platforms which has led to the delivery of the most capable frigate in service, a claim that was not considered achievable only 3 years earlier.

The FFG Enterprise embarked on a journey to focus on the outcomes to the customer, remove all barriers to success and do business differently. Through a focused change in management principles and cultural reform, the operational effect of the platforms has increased substantially and is in large part due to the efforts of Industry and CASG to deliver increased confidence in the platform, enabling operators to focus on improving their knowledge of the system and unlock its full capability.

The presentation will focus on the changes in the Support and Sustainment organisations utilising both contracting and relational levers to drive change, the results delivered from this and the subsequent acceleration in performance of the FFG capability.
